Female dogs in season
We have received reports from some visitors to the Country Park that their male dogs have 'gone missing' while following the scent of female dog in season.
The question of whether you can walk a dog while she’s in season is a common concern for pet owners. Since regular walks are essential for your dog’s routine, many wonder if it’s safe during this time. While it is possible, extra caution is necessary.
A female dog in heat attracts significant attention from male dogs, and the interest may be mutual, especially when she’s ovulating. To prevent unwanted advances or accidental mating, it’s best to walk her during quieter times of the day and in less crowded areas where fewer dogs are present. Always keep her on a lead to prevent her from running off in search of a mate, and stay vigilant in case any persistent males come too close.
Additionally, hormonal changes can affect her behaviour, making even well-trained dogs more adventurous or less responsive to commands. This increases the risk of wandering off or getting into unsafe situations. It’s also important to consider other dog owners, as male dogs may be drawn to her scent, potentially causing challenges for them.
If possible, providing exercise and mental stimulation at home or in a secure garden can be a good alternative to walks during this period. Prioritising your dog’s safety while being considerate of others will help ensure a smooth and stress-free experience.
